If I only had a rant
It must be that fickle finger of fate again.
Here I am, newly launched website up and running, a lull in my day grinding out billable hours or at least, words. What better moment to shift gears and rant?
Cool! Except there's nothing I really want to rant about.
Oh, sure there's the new iPad2, but its been done to death already. Sure, I want a pad device. I think it will fit my lifestyle and, more to the point, it is the future of journalism itself. And if journalism has a future, then ergo, so do I.
I want to subscribe to newspapers and magazines and other sources via a pad device and stop having to shovel newsprint by the ton our my front door every morning into that Behemoth Blue box parked at the foot of my front steps.
I'm just not ready to commit.
Okay, and for those who know me, this is not a romantic issue. I can commit. Just not now. Really, I'm committing as we speak in so many other areas of my life. Don't laugh. This is true.
I'm not sold on iPad for a variety of reasons:
1) Dad always said never buy anything the first year it comes out. He was talking about cars but I've learned his wisdom can be applied to technology too.
2) I still remember the Beta vs VHS debacle. For the record, I went VHS because it was easy to see it gained critical mass quickly.
3) I'd like to see the RIM Playbook. I'm a BlackBerry Torch user and a PC user so I'm not brainwashed by the cult of Apple, though I do admire and have used many, many Apple products over the years. I'm just not married to the brand. Heck, marriage is not a word we use in this household.
4) I'd also like to see Motorola, Acer and a host of other companies' version of the Pad. I especially want to play with Android on a Pad. I like Google's philosophy.
5) I was disappointed when Microsoft scrapped Courier, their version of the Pad since I though it had some really cool features, including a book format with two facing pages. As much as I really HATE some Microsoft products, mostly because of their lack of customer support, their general arrogance, complexity and piss poor record of releasing products which actually function (Vista anyone!!) you have to give them props because they are such a big player.
6) I'm a cheap bastard. I ain't a gonna splash out no $800 to be the first on my block with an iPad. No, sireee! I think that as other devices come to market, we'll see price drops. $400 is a good target range for a top of the line Pad.
Well, there you have it. I just wish I had a rant. Whoops. Maybe I just did.
